The year 2007 is an important year for me. This is a good
time to reflect on the past and to look forward to the
future, however long or short this may be, for evening is
falling. |

During my 40 years in the Institute, I have never forgotten
the advice I found in a spiritual magazine when I was a
novice: like Jesus, when we have built up a place, we move
on whenever we are asked; no matter how much we are needed
there or appreciated by the people. I have tried to live by
this advice and I must say it has been a rewarding
experience. I came to meet new and different people that
greatly inspired me: people like Sr Joanna from whom I
learned to overlook a lot of small unpleasantness when
dealing with children and young people, and Dr Elizabeth who
inspired me with her kindness, patience, love and compassion
towards the sick.
Missioned to different places in different capacities, I
discovered talents I otherwise might never have become aware
of. |

For instance, when I was in Renala Khurd, I was able
with the help of some Muslim neighbours and our Muslim
driver who drove me to the High Court in Multan nearly every
week, to get back our land that the Government had taken
over as access property. Or when in Hyderabad, I was able,
with the help of the Muslim girls of our boarding and their
parents, to start a letter-writing campaign in the local
papers in favour of a young Christian girl who was being
condemned to death because of alleged adultery. Of quite a
different nature was my experience in our hospital in
Faisalabad with patients having the "Cancer Syndrome" who go
through phases of blaming, denying, accepting, and
surrendering. They have helped me to understand others and
to listen beyond words and actions to what they are unable
to say.
All these varied experiences have made me rather versatile.
I have been involved in spiritual direction and giving
retreats, catechesis of children and adults and preparing
boys and girls for confirmation. I cherish a card with all
their signatures. Besides being in charge of various works:
convents, boardings, and serving as coordinator in our
hospital, I was also involved in issues of peace and
justice. In all this, I made it a point to train and prepare
sisters or lay people so that the continuity of the work
might be safeguarded. Through these varied works I have come
in touch with people of all walks of life, different social
and physical conditions, and of different faiths: Muslims,
Hindus, Christians. The many enriching experiences have
formed me and contributed greatly to my personal and
spiritual development. Now that I have finished my
fulfilling and enjoyable mandate of seven years in our
hospital in Faisalabad and been posted in our community in
Karachi, I feel the time has come to share these experiences
with the two young sisters doing their Bachelor of Education
(B. Ed.) and with the five aspirants living in our
community, beside serving the community in whatever way I
can. At present I am the local bursar. I try to be available
and kind to the sisters, just and fair to our workers, and
deal with the bank employees with a chat and a smile. Thus I
became good friends with the floor manager of the bank, a
Muslim lady, who shares her personal life with me. I spend a
considerable amount of time with our B. Ed students who are
being trained for the missions. Once a week I have a session
with the five aspirants on Franciscan spirituality.

My days are well filled and I really enjoy the things I am
still able to do. That I can do this fills me with a deep
sense of gratitude toward all – family, sisters, friends and
so many others, in and through whom I have experienced and
still experience the loving presence of God in my life. It
started at home where, after the sudden early death of my
father, my mother raised the six of us in a profoundly
religious atmosphere. And it continued in the years of my
religious formation where a solid foundation was laid for my
future mission as an FMM. I continue feeling touched and
healed again and again by God's love which streams into my
life through so many people in so many different ways. It is
this divine presence that sustains and encourages me to
carry out my activities, bringing God's loving presence to
the people I meet.
